When Loss Hits: A Personal Perspective

Loss and Grief

Having worked within this industry for many years and having looked at and dealt with many loss of service claims; sadly, I now see both sides of the coin.

As a family, we are dealing with the loss of my children’s father, who has passed suddenly. Loss whether through illness or accident, is loss whether it was expected or not expected, it is hard to manage, and the grief that comes to bear needs careful handling.

From my perspective, I have no claim to make; there is no justification to do so, but what if there had been?

After dealing with inconsiderate and unhelpful pension and insurance providers, this made me sit up and think. How do we as care experts deal with loss of service as “humans” who have no previous knowledge of the family until your instruction arrives?

If those whom I am dealing with, would have had access to medical records, then they would have the information on hand to understand where the family are “coming from”. It saves time and assists those at an assessment rather than having to go over the affects of the index event “over and over again”. We hear this stated many times in our work.

Having access to records, for Loss of Service reports, especially where children are involved, allows our associates, alongside a detailed letter of instruction, to illicit those details, without the need for onerous questions. It provides a better, detailed, holistic approach to report writing.

The more comfortable a person is at assessment, the easier to gather the information.

Whether, for claimant of defendant, our associates assess these families, sometimes where grief is palpable, and the more we understand, we can allow for the correct levels of care or replacement services for the future, allowing your roles as solicitors within the case, a greater understanding of the family’s needs.

As care experts, preparing a Loss of Service report, it a difficult task, where our professionalism must meet with empathy. Having access to historic records, assists us to provide quality reports.
